On September 26, 2008 FBI agents arrested a then fugitive evangelist Tony Alamo at an Arizona motel, accusing him of transporting minors across state lines for sex. On October 18, 2008 Alamo, extradited to Arkansas, was charged with two felony counts: a violation of the Mann Act — which prohibits children from being brought across state lines for sex — and that he aided and abetted a Mann Act violation. He is considered to hold a strong, sharp fundamentalist view on Christianity. Taking a look at his website he seems to emphasize the strictness of God’s moral commands, as well as God’s judgment upon sin, and generally holds to the King James Version as being the only English version of the Bible. He seems to preach that the Pope is corrupt and evil, is controlling every world political and religious figure, and that all current events are somehow orchestrations from the Vatican.
There are still a number of allegations originating from ex-members of his church who say that he still exerts heavy-handed control over his congregation, as well as various accusations of abuse.
Alamo remains in federal custody, awaiting trial on a 10-count indictment that alleges he transported juveniles across state lines for sexual purposes. Numerous witnesses at hearings have said Alamo would take young girls as his wives.
All this from an evangelical that his followers believed, “God himself has risen up!”
